In their match against Fulham over the weekend they continued their newfound form by winning their third straight in all competitions. They have also gone unbeaten in five out of their last six in the Premier League. While they are still in the relegation zone, a win in Saturday’s early match would push them up into 16th place up from 19th.
In the Black Cat’s 4-1 away win over last weekend they did an excellent job in keeping Fulham at bay while also capitalizing on the chances they had. Sunderland had just 41% possession with only 10 shots taken, but put six of those on target for their four goals. Defensively they endured 17 shots at them, but kept 47% of those outside of the box.
The Saints had a rough holiday period with matches against Newcastle, Tottenham, Everton and Cheslea, but they have now won their last two games in all competitions, albeit by a one goal margin. The return of Artur Boruc provided them with a clean sheet against West Brom over the weekend. However, this probably had more to do with the defense in front of him since there were just four shots taken by West Brom and only two of those were even on target.
Southampton should have done better over the weekend with their 62% possession that led to 18 shots, but only five of those on target.
My pick is a draw. Of the two teams Sunderland has more momentum, especially considering their 2-1 win over Manchester United in the League Cup which was then followed up by a 4-1 drubbing of their relegation rivals, Fulham. Southampton really struggled against West Brom, especially in created quality chances since 78% of their shots were outside of the box. Sunderland could certainly come out the better team in this one, especially if they can set themselves up as a solid defensive unit with a quick counter attack or set piece goal.
Betting Odds: Sunderland win: 3.01-3.20; Draw: 3.27-3.30; Southampton win: 2.33-2.38
Form: Sunderland (D, D, W, D, L, W) Southampton (D, L, W, L, L, W)
